2021 Yearly Report

Canberra 48 Hour Carnival, AIS Athletics Track, Canberra, 27-29 March 2021

I ventured to Canberra on the weekend of 27-28 March to watch the annual Sri Chinmoy 48 Hour Carnival. My main reason for going was to watch Justin Scholz (C 61) who had entered the 48 Hour Track Championship as a walker. Justin wanted to complete another centurion walk (100 miles within 24 hours) and he did just that, passing the mark in 22:50:00. It was his 14th centurion walk - a wonderful achievement.

April 2021 - We welcome new centurion Pramesh Prasad (C81)

The Coburg 24 Hour Carnival has co-hosted the annual Australian Centurions 24 Hour qualifying race since 2002 and has provided the venue for 38 new members to be added to our club (C27, C36-C48, C50, C52-60, C67-80).
This year was no exception, with Melbourne based racewalker Pramesh Prasad adding his name to our membership list and earning Australian Centurions badge C81 with a 100 mile walk time of 20:43:42. His walk in the 2021 Coburg Carnival 24 Hour walk was an impressive performance. He headed out fast, using the full racewalking technique, and powered through 52.693 km in the first 6 hours. Then he switched to an efficient strolling action that continued to eat up the miles. He passed the 100 km mark in 11:49:11 and reached the 100 mile mark in 20:43:42. From then he strolled a few laps to a total distance of 162.559km, his goal achieved.
To add further icing to the cake, Victorian based ultra walker/runner Justin Scholz (C61) also covered 100 miles within 24 hours with a time of 21:32:28.

August / September 2021 - There's no stopping Justin Scholz!

Justin Scholz (C 61) and Sharon Scholz (C 63) interrupted their cycle around Australia on the weekend of 14-15 August 2021 for the Track Ultra WA 24 Hour Carnival in Bunbury, Western Australia. Although having done nothing but cycling since his last hundred in April, Justin was able to complete yet another one hundred mile walk, his 16th, in a time of 23:10:55. They then continued on with their ride, stopping in Adelaide just in time for Justin to pursue another one hundred mile walk. Competing in the first day of the South Australian 6 Day Race at Thorndon Park in Adelaide on 26-27 September, Justin completed 100 miles in 21:31:52 before retiring, task completed. There seems no stopping the Scholz machine!

VALE Jim Turnbull (C21): 1936 - 2021

It is with great sadness that I must advise of the passing on 5th November 2021 of Jim Turnbull (C21) who qualified as an Australian Centurion with a 100 mile walk of 23:38.3 in Wanaroo, Western Australia. He was in fact our first Western Australian member and one of only two, the other being George Audley who qualified a year later, in 1986. Jim, who was born in 1936, died on 5th November 2021, aged 85. Jim and I last saw each other at the Lake Burley Griffin walking carnival in Canberra in 2011 but we kept up correspondence until he want into aged care 5 years ago. We pass on our condolences to his children Janine, Craig, Jamie and Glenn and their families.
You can read a little about him at http://www.centurions.org.au/centprofiles/21%20jim%20turnbull.pdf.
Gone but not to be forgotten by his fellow centurions.
