2018 Yearly Report
Welcome to our newest Australian Centurions
We are pleased to welcome 4 new Australian Centurions, after their qualifying performances in the 2018 Coburg 24 Hour Carnival, which was held in Melbourne on the weekend of 21-22 April 2018.

Coburg 24 Hour Carnival, Coburg, Victoria, 21-22 April 2018
2018 saw the Coburg 24 Hour Carnival reduced from two separate weekends (a 6H in March and a 24H in April) to single combined scheduling in April.
The walk divisions had an international flavour with entrants from Belgium, Netherlands, the Isle of Man and USA joining their Australian counterparts. The women’s 24 Hour race saw an easy win to Dutch walker Gertrude Achterberg with 131.745 km. South Australian Lorraine Billett impressed with her third place distance of 101.378km, setting five new W70 Australian walking records along the way.
In the men’s 24 hour walk, Chris Burn of the Isle of Man reached the 100 Mile mark with 22:08:09 and then retiring, with his goal achieved. Jantinus Meints of Holland was next to reach the 100 mile mark, with 22:25:34, then he too retired. The same was the case for Adrie Ross of Holland with 22:33:31 followed by race retirement. Australian Colin Heywood was next to reach the 100 mile mark with 22:46:53 but he then surprised by doing one further lap before retiring, thus ensuring a win in the 24H race. But it is fair to say that the 24H placings were of minor importance to these walkers, with their new Australian Centurion statuses of greater significance.

Stop Press - Justin Scholz finishes his 10th 'hundred'
Justin Scholz (C61) was in action on the weekend of 2-3 June 2018 in the annual Sri Chinmoy "24 Hours on Track" at the Campbelltown Athletics Centre, near Sydney. Justin completed yet another 100 miles walk, this time with 21:48:12, his 10th 100 mile walk finish. Of course, he has plenty of 100 mile run finishes as well so is a multi talented athlete! Two other walkers were in action. NSW racewalker Robert Osborne walked well for the first half before slowing, his final distance still a good 124.232km. And 72 year old NSW walker David Attrill did an excellent walk, finishing with 120.632km.
VALE Ken Walters (C26): 1932-2018
Sadly, I must inform everyone of the death of Australian Centurion Ken Walters (C26), who walked his 100 mile qualifier in 1994 in 22:28:31 at the Collingwood Harriers track in Melbourne. Ken died in Melbourne on Friday 14th September 2018, just a week short of his 86th birthday.
Ken was a larger than life figure who left his imprint in so many areas. A successful racewalking coach who worked with many of our Melbourne based walkers, he had been a masters walker himself in his middle years, and a top bike rider in the years before that.
You can read more about Ken in my obituary – see http://www.vrwc.org.au/tim-archive/articles/26%20Ken%20Walters.pdf.
He will be sadly missed by us all.
STOP PRESS - 6 Centurion badges for Rob Robertson
USA based Rob Robertson (C 68) became New Zealand Centurion C25 in Auckland on the weekend of 7-8 October 2018, with a time of 23:23:46. With this feat, Rob joined Jill Green, Caroline Mestdagh and Rudy Schoors as the only walkers to earn the 6 currently available Centurion badges.
Rob’s badges are US C78 (2015), AU C68 (2016), UK C1169 (2016), AF C11 (2016),CN C454 (2017) and now NZ C25 (2018).
STOP PRESS - 6 Centurion badges for Justin Scholz and Sharon Scholz
Justin Scholz (C 61) and Sharon Scholz (C 63) both successfully completed the African Centurions 100 Mile walk in Cape Town, South Africa, on the weekend of 20-21 October 2018, thus qualifying for their sixth centurion badges. Justin finished as the third man with 22:47:46 and Sharon finished as the first woman with 22:47:45. As per their normal practice, Justin and Sharon walked together, completing the required 402 laps of the athletics track side by side. But what makes this walk even more significant is that it earned each of them their sixth centurion badge, thus ensuring the full set. Only a couple of weeks after Rob Robertson gained his sixth badge in New Zealand, Justin and Sharon followed suite, only the fifth and sixth persons world wide to achieve this feat.
Justin kicked off his campaign with his first badge in the 2012 Australian Centurion qualifier and Sharon followed suite a year later in 2013. Since then, they have walked side by side in USA, New Zealand, Holland, England and now in South Africa to earn the remaining 5 badges.
